A Significant
and Historic Coastal Acreage!
|
|
|
East Thurlow Island is home to Shoal Bay, which is
located on the northern tip of the island overlooking
Cordero Channel and straight up Phillips Arm. A very
historic location in an absolutely tremendous setting
with views that are simply amazing. This offering
includes approximately 157 acres effectively
all of DL 156 on East Thurlow Island.

|
|
|
The property
encompasses the historic townsite of Shoal Bay that
was established in the late 1800's and in fact surveyed
and registered as a townsite on the 16th of October
in 1897. The survey documents identify 136 individual
land titles that were to be developed as the community
grew. Contiguous to the townsite properties is an additional
144 acres of forest land, stretching back almost one
mile and taking in the lush valley behind Shoal Bay,
which is also home to a year round creek that meanders
through the entire length of the property. |
| Certainly
different now than it was in a century gone by when
Shoal Bay was one of the most active communities on
the Coast. There was once up to 5 hotels in addition
to a community numbering over 5000 people who worked
all resource aspects the region was renowned for. Mining,
fishing, logging, hunting and trapping were certainly
the mainstay of the era. The steamships worked their
way up and down the Coast and Shoal Bay was one of the
primary destinations. At one point in history, it is
claimed the population of Shoal Bay exceeded that of
Vancouver and Shoal Bay was also short listed as a consideration
to be named as the capital of British Columbia. |
|
|
|
Today all
of these historic buildings have been removed or reclaimed
by nature or misfortune. The last of the hotels, which
functioned as Shoal Bay Lodge unfortunately burned to
the ground just a few years ago and the dockside general
store was the last to be removed in 2008. All that visually
remains are the concrete footings of the Shoal Bay Lodge.
|
During the last few years the present owners have started
to slowly rebuild and today Shoal Bay has two attractive,
yet modest post & beam with frame construction cottages,
a separate laundry building and bathhouse, a workshop,
and garden area.

A boardwalk
leads down to the last remaining significant structure,
which is a government dock facility that consists of
a substantial standing pier with approximately 400 -
500 feet of moorage.

East Thurlow Island is part of the
Discovery Islands, an archipelago between Vancouver
Island and the mainland, whose waters connect the
Strait of Georgia with Johnstone Strait and the Queen
Charlotte Strait. These islands and the intricate
watercourses that weave between them are home to some
of the most impressive scenery on the BC coast such
as snowcapped mountains and deep inlets fed by tumbling
glaciers as a backdrop, calm protected channels and
picturesque islets, boiling tidal rapids and historical
homestead cabins and communities.
|
|
| The Discovery
Islands are considered major gateways to the very popular
Desolation Sound region; well known for its waterfalls,
secret coves, rock cliffs and tranquil natural beauty
with plenty of opportunity for wildlife viewing, including
bald eagles and bears. For the outdoor enthusiast the
recreation possibilities here are endless and of an
unrivalled quality; it is truly one of the best jumping
off points for a variety of outdoor activities including
fishing, prawning, kayaking & hiking. This area
enjoys a nice temperate climate and the waters here
are warmer than in most other areas on the coast. The
breathtaking silence that surrounds these islands is
characteristic of the ambience in remote coastal locations. |
